South Africa’s Garden Route is a glorious holiday destination, covering approximately 300 km of breath-taking coastline views between Mossel Bay and Storms River. I recently spent one week touring the Garden Route, and these were by far my favourite restaurants. So, if you love good food, good drinks and a great view, then go ahead and save this list!
1. Have a Fresh Strawberry Daiquiri at the Redberry Farm
Redberry Farm is just an 8-minute drive from George Airport, and from as little as R25 (< $1,50), you get to pick your own strawberries and enjoy the sweet country life! If you’re not quite ready to munch on the fruits of your labour, then you can grab something to eat at one of the several eateries on the farm…. Or better yet, you can savour the sweet life whilst sipping on a fresh strawberry daiquiri!
2. Soak in the Sunset Whilst Having a Cocktail and Fresh Seafood at the Drydock Restaurant
Situated right on the water’s edge, the Drydock restaurant allows you to soak in the African sunset with uninterrupted views of the Knysna lagoon. I tried the signature Drydock Sunset cocktail (a delicious mix of Rémy Martin cognac, Cointreau, and orange juice), followed by the grilled baby sole and prawns combo – Honestly, some of the best seafood I’ve had in my life!
3. Savour freshly baked goods at île de païn
On my first day in the Garden Route, I met a really sweet Swiss guy who had recently relocated to Knysna. He quickly became my trip advisor, photographer and videographer for the day! My new friend, recommended the French-owned café-style restaurant, île de pain, on Thesen Island, Knysna. If you have a sweet tooth or are a lover to artisanal breads, then you’ll love île de païn. It was so good that I was there twice in one week! île de païn closes at 15h00, so make sure you get there before the end of the day!
4. Sip on crisp rosé whilst taking in the forest views at Tsala Treetop Restaurant
Nestled amongst the tranquil forests between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, the restaurant at Tsala Treetop lodge is perfect for a lazy lunch. With an extensive wine selection, great food, and soothing views, this is the perfect getaway. Be sure to make a reservation before you visit, and if you can’t get a reservation at the Tsala restaurant, you can try the Zinzi Restaurant, which is on the same property.
Enjoy!
